He loves to be pet and follow you around the yard. He is very gentle with children as well. He lives happily outside in a pen. I would love to find a farm or a place with plenty of space for him. He is full grown, about 80 pounds of love. I am willing to help transport him to the right home.

Hi, we have a Hamp cross pig that was my daughters 4H project this last year. Project was going very well, weighed in for fair at 268 on September 29th 2015, show day October 2nd and auction was October 3rd. She placed 1st in her class and 3rd overall. The morning of auction day, we showed up to feed and Jasper was down and breathing very shallow, very cold and would not respond to anything. We checked him before we left the night before and he was his normal self, so within in 8-9 hours he was in bad shape. We started some electrolites, water and my daughter covered him with towels, blankets and layed with him until his body warmed up. ... (Read More)His breathing got better an was very alert but he could not stand up. His hind legs would give out soon after standing. We called our Vet and he thought he may have come down with Phnemonia which affects their hind end. Due to the timing of the sale, we were only allowed to give him 2 different types of medication and hope that it worked and he could be auctioned off in a few hours. We contacted our breeder and thought he had come down with a bacterial infection which also affects their hind end. With all our attempts and Jasper feeling better, eating and drinking really well, he was too weak to stand for very long let alone walk. He needed to walk on his own to be sold in the auction. The only other option was to bring him home. Once home we had our Vet out again and gave him Penicillin to help if it was a bacterial infection. We think it may have helped and within a couple days he was walking but very wobbly and if he attempted to run his hind legs give out and he will fall. The wobbly has subsided but he is still very uneasy on his hind end. He is very sweet, lives with 2 goat sisters BUT the pen he is in is not suitable for a long term pig to live. We think if he had an area to roam and get more exercise it may help. Which we do not have that area for him and we think he may be bored because the pen is just too small. Not only is he rooting up the entire pen and causing damage to the fence which is not meant for long term pig care, but he is destroying the barn/stall where they sleep. We really don't know what to do with him. I don't want to sell him for food, I can't now. He is a character, my daughter is attached and he is probably close to 400lbs Im guessing and because we are unsure what happened to him to leave permanent damage to his hind end. He would make a great pasture pet and isn't very expensive to feed every month. If we had the space and proper pen we would keep him. But we can't, we just don't know where to turn with him. I hope someone can take him to live out his life. He really is a sweetie. Love the goats he lives with. I will try to get a good picture of him or the goats sleeping on top of him. Thanks, Liz (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Farm Animal in California
Farm Animals can make good pets in California if they match your IifestyIe. Farm animals such as sheep, goats, and pigs are useful additions to working farms. For example, sheep can provide people with milk for cheese and other dietary staples, as well as wool for clothing. Dairy goats are so hardy and such valuable sources of food that providing one for a family living in extreme poverty (through an organization such as Heifer International) can completely alter the existence of that family. Farm animals provide manure for fertilizer to grow healthy vegetables. The sale of dairy, wool, and offspring of farm animals can be a major source of income. Many people think farm animals are cute and picturesque and would like to own one or more. However, caring for these animals is very labor intensive, and unless these animals are part of a working farm, they can become the victims of abuse or neglect.

Potbellied pigs are an excellent example. Potbellied pigs became popular as house pets in the nineties. However, pigs can weigh over 130 pounds and are not as easy to care for as other household pets. Pigs need to be outside to satisfy their natural instincts to rut. Sadly, many owners of potbellied pigs are not ready for the commitment and challenges of having a pig for a pet, leaving many animals in need of adoption.
