    Farm Animals can make good pets in South Africa if they match your IifestyIe. Farm animals such as sheep, goats, and pigs are useful additions to working farms. For example, sheep can provide people with milk for cheese and other dietary staples, as well as wool for clothing. Dairy goats are so hardy and such valuable sources of food that providing one for a family living in extreme poverty (through an organization such as Heifer International) can completely alter the existence of that family. Farm animals provide manure for fertilizer to grow healthy vegetables. The sale of dairy, wool, and offspring of farm animals can be a major source of income. Many people think farm animals are cute and picturesque and would like to own one or more. However, caring for these animals is very labor intensive, and unless these animals are part of a working farm, they can become the victims of abuse or neglect.

    Potbellied pigs are an excellent example. Potbellied pigs became popular as house pets in the nineties. However, pigs can weigh over 130 pounds and are not as easy to care for as other household pets. Pigs need to be outside to satisfy their natural instincts to rut. Sadly, many owners of potbellied pigs are not ready for the commitment and challenges of having a pig for a pet, leaving many animals in need of adoption.

    Farm animals are useful sources of fertilizer, food, and clothing. One dairy goat can provide about a ton of milk and two to three kids annually. Pigs are smarter than dogs and are the fourth most intelligent type of animal, behind humans, primates, and dolphins. Sheep cheese, though uncommon in the U.S., is tasty and very popular in other parts of the world. Goat milk, unlike cow milk, contains all of the essential amino acids, making it the only regular source of complete protein for countless traditionally vegetarian populations all over the world. Goat dairy products are easier to digest than cow milk, and may even help to prevent some types of gastrointestinal problems.
